Because this rod is more durable than the plastic rod, and also significantly stiffer, it makes the gun cycle more smoothly and consistently. It also reduces muzzle flip and felt recoil by adding weight to the front of the gun. See the photos above to determine if you have a new or old P9. The front of the frame on the old style P9 has a squared off appearance shown in the second picture . New P9's have a bevel in the slide, shown in the third picture.
